In de islam is een geleerde iemand die weet hoe je Allah spelt.
Volgens de schrijver van een artikel over de reden waarom mohammedanen maar geen Nobelprijzen weten te winnen (al zou ik niet weten of dat wel echt een aanbeveling is; die voor de Literatuur of de Vrede zou ik niet hoeven) was Al Ghazali de filosoof die de koran weer het middelpunt van het heelal maakte, zij het dat hij een rationele’ benadering voorstond. Ik kan niet anders dan veel bewondering hebben voor de rationele benadering van de islam. Zo zijn ze er natuurlijk achtergekomen dat de keitjes, waarmee overspelige vrouwen gestenigd dienen te worden, niet meer of minder dan 69 gram horen te wegen. Dan duurt het allemaal lekker lang, natuurlijk.
The Ashariyya led by Ghazali and Rumi rejected the rationalists Mutazilis whom, in their view, had forsaken religion and had detracted from God and His revelation. In absence of Ashariyya, our history might have evolved differently. When Ibn Khaldun in his ‘Introduction in absence’ (Mogadameh) mentioned that Africans are black because of geographical and environmental conditions, it was the Ashariyya who ended such scientific observations by declaring people are black because God created them as such. When Physicians tried to find the connection between the brain and hand’s movements, it was Ghazali who mocked scientific inquiry and stated hands move because God wants them to move” (Alchemy of Happiness, Kimiyaya Saadat).
Ook in de VS is besloten dat kennis van de koran en de soena de hoogste vorm van kennis is. Dat zetten ze gewoon onder ten misconceptions about islam. Laat ik eerlijk zijn: kennis die de mensheid goed doet mag ook. Maar wat is er beter voor de mensheid dan de islam? Nou? Nou? Wie kan er leven zonder te weten hoe je je schaamhaar moet plukken?
Allah has taught us via the Qur’an and Sunnah that we all have a certain amount of free will. This free will must be exercised properly in accordance with the Qur’an and Sunnah to please the Creator. This is plenty of motivation for all Muslims to push themselves to be the most knowledgeable, effective Muslims they can be. If Muslim societies today are not meeting their potential, it is surely not due to their knowledge of Islam, rather it is their ignorance of this way of life. The importance of seeking knowledge and working are made clear in the Sunnah.
Knowledge of the Qur’an and Sunnah are clearly the best types of knowledge, and knowledge which benefits humanity is good as well. The Qur’an and Sunnah do not condemn the study of this earth and in fact the Creator encourages us to investigate the world we live in according to the following verse from the Qur’an (translation),
[3:190-191] Behold! in the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the alternation of night and day, there are indeed Signs for people of understanding. People who celebrate the praises of Allah, standing, sitting, and lying down on their sides, and contemplate the (wonders of) creation in the heavens and the earth, (with the thought): “Our Lord! not for nothing have You created (all) this! Glory to You! Give us salvation from the penalty of the Fire.
Zo hoort het dus. Nadenken over de schepping en hard bidden dat je niet in de hel terechtkomt. Méér en niet minder islam, dat heb je nodig. Als je wat wilt bereiken ten minste.
