Live concert in a Japanese living room

A couple of years ago I posted some music videos by Mioriii, a Japanese woman who combines music with her work as a ’touch care’ therapist. Touching, I mean physical touching, has become a somewhat touchy topic in these time of Covid-19 (lame pun fully intended, no apologies) but we can still touch each other, right? With music.

It really sucks that we can’t go to venues now to enjoy some live music but there are musicians treating us to their live performances by streaming video or via YouTube. Ryuichi Sakamoto gave a wonderful piano concert with some guest musicians last May and Yawning Man performed in the desert for our pleasure. The desert, how’s that for isolation!

Mioriii, who calls herself Ms Indie Pop now, gave a home concert in her own living room, recorded on video by her husband and uploaded on YouTube. “I wanted to start something in this difficult situation”, she writes to me. “I tried to create the atmosphere of a live performance. The most difficult thing was to avoid getting complaints about the noise from my neighbors during my performance.”

I really like that, people making efforts and using their talents to try to make a difficult situation a little more beareable. Just the fact that Ms Indie Pop went through all that trouble deserves our admiration. Also the fact that we’re intimately connected this way with people on the other side of the world I find touching and heart-warming and makes me all mellow inside.

Anyway, enjoy, and if you like this funky mix of ambient, electronica, and world music, there’s another video from the same home concert. (PB)
