Patrizia Laquidara returns to Sicily in her new song

I’ve been an admirerer of Italian singer Patrizia Laquidara since her album Indirizzo portoghese and I was happy to see she has a new song out, at last, called Assabenerica. In the video of the song she returns to the city where she was born, Messina on Sicily, and we see a procession that reminds me very much of a Japanese ritual I’ve seen a few times, the Vara.

We see men and a few women push a cart carrying a statue of the ascension of the Holy Maria through the streets. I understand this ritual is a blend of pagan and christian elements. In Japan they have similar festivals where portable shrines, called mikoshi are carried through the streets. The Vara and those Japanese festivals look very much alike.
