Psycho hippie office ladies from Japan
Fancy Numnum, the name alone is enough to take an immediate liking to this all-girl band that combines a girlie, hippyish cuteness with something a lot darker underneath the surface. Like Buddy Girl and Mechanic, Fancy Numnum has this psychedelic repetitiveness peppered with synthesizer- and guitar effects. A bit lethargic, but always with a dreamy atmosphere.
I suspect a big influence from The Beatles but also from Brian Eno and some of the songs remind me of modern folk bands like The Flash Girls and of the music of Juana Molina.
Good luck finding their CD’s, when you’re outside of Japan. If you’re fast, you can order the remaining copies at Amazon. Here is their Soundcloud and they have a website.
Personally I rather like this remix of one of their songs by Dr. Strangelove and this video of the girls, dressed like office ladies, walking through a park and feeding turtles. Or tortoises, I can never tell the difference.
