Eiko Ishibashi, a musical Miró
I had never heard of Eiko Ishibashi, although she seems to have some international fame and she is a really, really fantastic musician.
Taking a minimalist approach to the singer/songwriter genre, Ishibashi carefully places all the elements of her songs on a canvas like a musical Miró; some tiny, restraint drums here, a robust, dark synthesizer there, with lots of space in between, yet forming a tight union.
And it’s all very pleasant to experience, sweet and soothing, still there’s always some feeling of estrangement to the songs, something that keeps drawing your attention.
The above song, Toki wo tsugete, is taken from her latest album, Car and Freezer, which was brought out last year. You can buy it on iTunes. (PB)
