Christmas tragedy with Lulu + Mikeneko Homeless

If you are tired of hearing the same Christmas songs all day for weeks on end, here is a Christmas album unlike any other and the good news is that you can download it for absolutely free.

It is by Lulu, a new kid on the block of Japanese indie-pop, in cooperation with a group called Mikeneko Homeless. As you can hear, Lulu has the same detached yet melancholic way of singing as New Zealander Lorde. Nothing revolutionary here, but I quite like it.

There’s nothing particularly christmassy about the album, Christmas in Japan being mainly a date-thing. Japanese reserve a table at a restaurant at Christmas eve to eat chicken with their loved one. That’s what the song above is about: a couple that’s too damn busy all year working working working and the only time they get some quality time together is at Christmas.

But the fun is already over, he drops her off at the train station, being a typically romantic Japanese male, and she doesn’t want to urge him to stay for fear of troubling him (must never trouble the Japanese man). He does, however slip a ring in her pocket. (PB)
