An important message from Fishbone
One of the greatest band in pop history is also one of the most scandalously underrated ones: Fishbone. Fishbone must be one of the first bands, if not the first to blend different black music genres with metal and hard rock. The Red Hot Chilli Peppers are hugely indebted to them, something they’ve always acknowledged.
Anyway, somewhere in the early nineties they brought out their metallest album with the brilliant title ‘Give a Monkey a Brain... And He’ll Swear He’s the Center of the Universe‘, filled with hard-hitting songs with hard-hitting lyrics and the song ‘Servitude‘ is one of my absolute favorites because it demands you to think about who the people are you unthinkingly declare your loyalty to.
To whom, whom do you pray?
Do dollars wash your sins away
Does God love cold hard cash?
Do you say, if we all just continue to pay
All our ailments will go away
And our souls all will be saved
God’s not with you
“Holy Roller”
Your heart dwells in hell
Fitting for these times because of course, we need solidarity and a sense of community to beat this nasty corona virus, but that doesn’t mean you should let your leaders do all your thinking for you and gladly hand over your rights and freedoms.
That said, don’t be a jackass and avoid the crowds, keep a physical distance and wash your goddamn hands. (PB)
