The Molice from Tokyo: full-bodied but light-hearted rock music

Because I’m this super important Dutch authority on Japanese Indy music I got a message from The Molice, a three piece band from Tokyo, who want to know what I think of their new video. The group consists of singer/lyricist/guitarist Rinko, guitarist Yuzuru Takeda and drummer Hirofumi “Paro” Katsumoto. The latter joined The Molice in 2015.

The Molice has been around for quite a while, being founded in 2007, and they’ve toured Asia, Europe and The States, but I hadn’t come across them yet.

But I like their music. It’s robust, especially the drummer pulls no punches, and together the members create a thick wall of sound, but the song is still light and catchy. I listened to a couple of other songs and like those too.

The song above, The Ray, is taken from the album of the same name, brought out in 2018 already. Their overall sound reminds me of Pixies leader Frank Black’s solo work and of Hüsker Dü. Full-bodied but fruity rock with strong tannins.

As for their videos, let’s say they’re endearing.

You can download their music on Bandcamp and they’re on Spotify too. (PB)
