Why Mondo Grosso’s songs work so well

The new Mondo Grosso is out, ‘Big World‘ and it’s as I expected: utterly compelling and wonderful. The song above is a good example of how and why Mondo Grosso’s songs work so well. Sweeping rythms underline a melancholic song, culminating in a kind of chant: “ma-da, mi-ta, ko-to, na-hai, a-ya, shī-hi, on-do…” and so forth. Like a goddess riding a storm and then a priest chanting a prayer. This is why I compared Mondo Grosso to Beethoven earlier, because of the throbbing rythms in combination with the compelling melodies.

The singer in this case is Saito Asuka of the all-female idol group Nogizaka46. Osawa Shinichi (Mondo Grosso’s real name) always takes good singers whose talent is usually totally wasted on disposable dumbo-pop, to let them exploit their own real potential. Beautiful video to go with this all (notice the feet, again, like in the one before this) and your week just couldn’t have started better. (PB)
