Long Hot Summer by The Style Council

No Summer Mixtape is complete without the slow, lazy song Long Hot Summer by The Style Council, the somewhat odd eighties band with which punk-rocker Paul Weller seemed to want to join in on the succes of jazz-inspired pop bands at the time, like Matt Bianco and Everything But The Girl and a band named Carmel, that I mainly liked for the cool album sleeves, designed by Serge Clerc.

Speaking of Everything But The Girl, there’s a really great, sultry, melancholic song by The Style Council, sung by Tracey Thorn of Everything But The Girl, The Paris Match, that I would have put on Peter’s Summer Mix Tape instead of The Long Hot Summer, if only it would have had a nice video.

This video of The Long Hot Summer is really silly. Weller seems to have exchanged his militant intellectualist bad boy image for a hopeless George Michael emulation and his Style Council co-founder Mick Talbot looks like a Tory. I don’t know who the bloke with the bongos is. There’s some frolicking sur l’herbe and then at the end Paul and Mick seem about to kiss each other against a romantic sunset. (PB)
