I’m so excited; the real Bowie is back!
Dear readers, you cannot possibly fathom how excited I am about the new video David Bowie has just released. An appetizer for his upcoming new album, ‘★’ due out on his birthday, January 8th. I have to share it although you’ve probably already seen it elsewhere.
What a great track! What a stunning video! Now I know ★ will be even better that The Next Day, my favorite album of 2013.
First impressions: I am bad at understanding a song’s lyrics, I mostly just hear sounds. But from what I can make out in combination with the images, the trance-like dancers worshiping the skull of a ‘man who fell to earth’, my guess is this is about belief, as many of Bowie’s songs are (for instance ‘Loving the Alien‘ and ‘Word on a Wing‘, in which he sings: “Just because I believe don’t mean I don’t think as well’). A phrase like “We’ll take your passport and your shoes” reminds us all of the last time we checked into a plane, doesn’t it?
The complicated structure of the song, with the twists and change in mood and pace, somewhere in the middle, made me think of Bowie’s song ‘Teenage Wildlife‘, on his Scary Monsters album. There is some gospel in there too.
I know you all lost faith when Bowie released ‘Sue‘, but I never did, also because of the superior B-side of that single, ‘Tis a pity she was a whore‘. Bowie is back. I mean the old Bowie, the Bowie that died after Scary Monsters. (PB)
