Chai: four quirky girls from Nagoya

Chai are four quirky girls from Nagoya who call their own sound ‘neo-kawaii‘. Kawaii means cute so apparently they offer a new approach to cuteness, Japan’s number one export product, although I read somewhere that ‘neo‘ stands for ‘new excite onna‘ which is bad English for ‘new exciting women’ or ‘new excitement by women’ (‘onna’ meaning woman).

If I am totally honest: they are adequate as musicians and their tunes are nice and they are certainly very charming, but after three songs their schtick gets a little tiresome. Well that’s just my opinion. Listen for yourself.

This song, however, I find quite brilliant. It has a good melody, is well composed and funky. The accompanying video, shot in Hongkong, has the feel of a sultry summer evening. I like it. I hope you too enjoy it. (PB)
