Sultry summer music by Mondo Grosso
Summer time, for me, is a time for sultry music, preferably with sultry videos and I don’t know about you, but I don’t think they come much sultrier than this.
The dancer in this video, (Aina The End, founding member of J-Pop idol group BiSH, who is also the vocalist in this song), strikes poses that immediately remind me of the statuettes of big-breasted, scantily clad fantasy girls you can buy in the many anime and manga related stores in Tokyo, thereby objectifying her self as a sex thing. So I can see how this may be somewhat problematic in these times, especially since the #Metoo movement is still struggling very hard to be heard in Japan, where sexist oppression results in many, many heartbreaking tragedies of horrible abuse.
And yet, I do think this is a beautiful video. The music is by Shinichi Osawa, known by his stage name Mondo Grosso, a DJ dabbling in electronic music firmly grounded in acid jazz, soul and R&B. His videos are usually strikingly beautiful, as you can also see here and here. (PB)
