Under Cover with Valerie June

Few voices are as soothing as Valerie June’s. She sounds old and young at the same time, laid back, vulnerable but self-assured, wise beyond her years, soft but tanned, warm. I don’t usually explore her musical genre, a mix of blues and folk. I thought I liked John Hiatt for a while but found it boring in the end. I make an exception for Valerie June.

Most of the songs she covers on her new album Under Cover I don’t know, except for John Lennon’s Imagine of course, a song I thought I had heard enough for the rest of my life, but June gives it an extra layer, a new shine.

As for the rest, I was never a fan of Bob Dylan or Nick Drake, I’m not familiar with the works of Frank Ocean, so all these songs I’m hearing for the first time. They make for an intimate album that shows June’s musical influences. Ideal for a cold, dark evening or a warm, sunny Sunday morning. (PB)
