These caramel girls are not what you think

I am not crazy about the Japanese maid-fetish thing. It’s extremely sexist and exploitative and in Tokyo the girls dressed as maids trying to lure men to so-called maid cafes never seem to be very happy.

But this new girl band seems to make a point of it. The band members observe being called a female band in a derogatory way and throw it back at their critics. They say: “Alright, you call us female and you’re right, we’re the most female band ever, if that’s your definition of being rebellious and speaking out against injustice.”

Their lyrics seem pretty dark as well:

I just want to eat sweeties, until they kill me
they’re gunna kill me, kill me, kill me with calories

Caramel Candid contrasts poppy, girly cliches with harsh realism and dark eroticism. Caramel stands for sticky, gooey sweetness but also for bodily fluids. Vomit and menstrual blood:

Makeup is melting, always gooey always sticky sticky
Stepping on dirty vomit, always messy sticky

Girls always carry round, that gooeyness deep inside
throwing `way a thousand sticky napkins just to get by

In the video caramel is also used as depilatory, which reminded me of Nadine Labaki’s film Caramel, also about caramel as bringer of both pleasure and pain.

And then there’s the amazing music. Something between punk and pop, with an angry energy, provocative, defiant, vocals Good riffs, nice twists, lots of things happening. I love it. They have four more songs, I hope there will be enough for an album soon.
