Entering dragon territory with PIKA☆
We seem to have a Japanese Bjork at hand here. Her name is PIKA☆, she is the former drummer of the (disbanded?) cult rock formation Afrirampo and I discovered her via the great Toyokazu Mori on the fantastic website Beehype, a great way to introduce yourself to the best alternative pop music from other countries then the US, the UK and your own.
My comparison of PIKA☆ with Bjork is based solely on her eccentricity, musically she seems to be more in the direction of PJ Harvey, which is only to give my readers an idea of where to place her. I am hearing a lot of seventies rock psychedelia but really PIKA☆ is a league of her own.
Ryuichi Sakamoto seems to be a big fan of hers, calling her a goddess, a Venus.
She has a new album out, Ryu no Sumika (龍の棲家, ‘Dragon’s habitat’; ‘Here be dragons’) and you can order it here.
