New Ogre You Asshole is an intimate masterpiece
Yesterday, the 9th of November, was a day of ogres. An ogre got elected in the White House but much more importantly Japanese band Ogre You Asshole brought out their fantastic new album.
It has a Japanese title: ‘Handoru o hanasu mae ni‘, which sounds like an instruction you would read in the cockpit of an airplane or something: ‘Before releasing the handle’, and an English one: ‘Everythingsomethingnothing‘ which seems like the direction the US is going at the moment. The content is the same though.
Anyway, Ogre You Asshole is known for their catchy tunes, intricate compositions and refreshing, energetic approach of sixties and seventies psychedelic rock (that’s how I categorize them anyway) but this new album seems more intimate and darker, yet also warmer en mellower, like a fine old red wine.
I especially like the bass-lines and the upbeat yet restrained percussion, somehow countering the slow pacing of the tracks and the almost lethargic singing of band-leader Manabu Deto.
Ideal for the dark, cold, grey months to come. Highly highly recommended. (PB)
