Soutaiseiriron

Soutaiseiriron means ‘relativity theory’. The band that operates under this name crafts intricate, melodious songs that mixes all kinds of indie genres with good old idol pop.

They have a new album out that’s pretty neat but not as good as their older albums, I have to say. Singer Etsuko Yakushimaru, meanwhile, has made a solo album under the artist name Flying Tentacles which couldn’t be more different from Soutaiseiriron, not to say it’s completely inaccessible as far as I’m concerned.

It’s released by Ryuichi Sakamoto’s label Commons. I last saw Sakamoto live a couple of years ago in a church in Holland, together with my girlfriend. It was baffling. We left the gig half way hysterically laughing.

I have tremendous admiration for Sakamoto, but there’s only so much plings and ploings and static noise I can endure. (PB)
