Uma is the best Suiyoobi no Campanella album so far

I’ve been following Suiyoobi no Campanella (水曜日のカンパネラ) for a while now because I always found the group utterly charming, with often catchy tunes, a little off-beat dilettantish, and especially because of the videos with übercute but slightly weird singer Komai.

But their new album Uma blows me a away! It’s a very adventurous mix of rhythms and sounds, ranging from the dream-like celestial to the down-to-earth J-poppy hardcore, always quite dancable, verging at times on a trance-like gnawa trip.

The things Komai does with her voice! She’s quite the rapper, has a way with words one should appreciate even without knowing any Japanese. With the sounds, rather. Also she can really act with her voice.

Suiyoobi pulls out everything they got on this one. Very exciting album, very titillating and a little disorienting. What more could you want of a pop album? Bound to end up high on my list of fave albums in December. (PB)
