Let’s sing, let’s dance with Park Hye Jin

Park Hye Jin is a Korean-American techno-house-hiphop artist who sings, chants and raps in English and Korean, just like Yaeji and she’s just as brilliant.

Park’s way of rapping/singing is more detached, which is something, it occurs to me, that characterizes a lot of young female singers these days, like Lorde and Japanese singers Lulu and iri. With Park it seems to intensify the emotional impact of her songs, like in the title song of her new album, ‘Before I Die‘:

I miss my mom, I miss my dad I miss my sister, I miss my brother

Sung in her typically detached, toneless, emotionless voice it makes it all the more touching. Or at least I think so. Same with ‘Can I get Your Number’:

‘Can I get your number? or not? Can I get your number? or not? Can I get your number? or not? Can I get your number? or not? We can fuck, we can fuck We can fuck, we can fuck.’

Especially after a song like ‘Before I Die‘, about missing her family, the drone of ‘we can fuck‘ gives an extra wallop. Park is not hesitant to sing explicitly and quite bluntly about sex:

D, I dare you, e, I eat you
F, I fuck you, g, I give you
D, I dare you, e, I eat you
F, I fuck you, g, I give you

Look at you
난 딸고있지 이미 검악있어 몸위를 만져
Don’t be shy, It’s okay 그냥 너를 말계
Say, I’m your dad

Sex with me, sex with me
Wanna sex with you, wanna sex with you

Musically Park draws upon a wide range of genres, from jazzy samples to house and techno, with the song in the video above, ‘Let’s Sing, Let’s Dance‘, being one of the more danceable tracks.

The new album is pretty good, and Park brought out two EP’s which are not too shabby either. Check her out. (PB)
