Some laid-back music to go with the scorching heat and a cooling drink
Now that we are all suffering from the scorching heat, some laid-back summer music is in order. Luckily, there is a new album out by Sakamoto Shintaro, no relation to Sakamoto Ryuichi, but the former leader of the band Yura Yura Teikoku. Like a Fable is his fourth solo album and offers you a hideaway of sorts, a tropical island, where you can let the trees sway, the winds blow and be alone in your hut with your radio.
Years ago I wrote that his sound reminds me of the Dutch Indo-Rock, because of Sakamoto’s reliance on the steel guitar, in combination with his old-fashioned rock sound. On Like a Fable the steelguitar has been supplanted somewhat by horns and a drum machine, but it’s still the same relaxed music, sardonnically ironic like Steely Dan, ideal for a sultry afternoon in your hammock, cooling long-drink at hand.
