Hitsuji Bungaku: Real rockers, good melodies
Long live YouTube’s algorithms! Sure, once you have watched a Trump-video, you get sucked into a hole of extremist rightism and Ku Klux Klan shit, but if you’re into Japanese indie music by women, YouTube presents you one gem after the other. Spotify too.
Case in point: Hitsuji Bungaku, which means sheep literature, is a rock band that started in 2011, when founder Moeka Shiotsuka was just a 15-year old high school student.
The song in the video above is from the album 12 Hugs Like Butterflies which contains many strong songs like these. Sometimes they remind me of the band Tricot, especially Shiotsuka’s singing.
Some tracks are real rockers, others are more delicate. They are well-composed with good melodies. I like it when bands invent in good melodies and not just riffs. (PB)
