In a Happy Land

Remember the competition Ryuichi Sakamoto had set up together with film-maker Apichatpong Weerasethakul? People were asked to use a track from Sakamoto’s latest album async to make a short video.

Many film makers sent in their videos and I posted a couple of them on this website. Sakamoto and Weerasethakul have now both picked their favorite and the above video is Sakamoto’s winner, ‘In a Happy Place’ by Sandup Lepcha.

It’s kind of poetic documentary filmed in the Indian state Sikkim, I believe. ‘The image did not surrender to the music, nor did the music to the image’, Sakamoto writes. ‘The film granted the music depth in meaning but also used the music to leap into transcendence.’

Async, by the way, is one of the most beautiful pieces of art created this past year. (PB)
