Introducing Falsettos (they’re awesome!)

One of the most exciting new musical discoveries this year, for me, is Tokyonese band Falsettos, consisting of five – I shouldn’t say that in these times of politically correct Internet policing, but oh, well – very hot damsels who clearly have been listening to all the music I passionately loved when I was still a disturbed young weirdo: Bauhaus, Siouxsie, Pixies and probably also avant garde singer/songwriters like Laurie Anderson.

Heavy bass, frantic screaming, throbbing drums and Jesus, horns! Punk, goth, new wave and jazz all take turns in the no-prisoners-taken, musical chainsaw mayhem that is Falsettos. The singer is obviously crazy, they have some nifty live videos up on YouTube, they are on Soundcloud, they have a Facebook page and a Twitter account, but unfortunately there’s no album yet.

Let’s hope they are in a studio recording one right now.

Oh, and I wouldn’t have heard of them without Ian Martin’s blog Clear and Refreshing. Martin is a bit too wordy for my taste, but he always has the freshest of the fresh new indie bands in Japan. (PB)
