Introducing garage rockers DEVIATIØN, from Tokyo

Okay so let’s take a little break from the politics and the diatribes and start this what looks to become a glorious summer day with some noise from Japan.

This here marginal blog, hated by virtually everyone in the Lowlands, from politicians to journalists and sexists and feminists alike, is so hugely famous in Japan that bands now mail me to ask me to please write about their new EP on Frontaal Naakt.

Well, at least one band did. They are DEVIATIØN and they are from Tokyo and I can’t find any information whatsoever on them anywhere. They have a Twitter account and they’re on Bandcamp and Soundcloud.

What’s important is the music of course. DEVIATIØN sounds like a garage rock band. Literally. They sound like they recorded their EP, ‘War’ in an empty underground car park, as far removed from the recording equipment as possible. So there’s work to be done on that front unless it’s on purpose, of course.

Other than that I like DEVIATIØN a lot. The band seems to be inspired by underground bands from the eighties like Bauhaus (the second track on ‘War’ is in fact a Bauhaus cover) and The Cramps, with a soupçon of romantic Hillbillies like Chris Isaac and it’s very energetic and aggressive and full of atmosphere.

The singer has the pathos of a vampire from a C horror movie from 1958 (which I mean as a huge compliment! third rate horror movies are the best horror movies, especially when they’re from the fifties), the drummer is a beast, the guitarist a harpy and the bass player reliably keeps it all together although a fuller recording sound would do him (I assume he’s a him) more right.

Give it a listen, dear readers, and if you like their songs, throw a couple of bucks at them (you decide how much) by downloading ‘War‘ from their Bandcamp website. (PB)
