Japanese Christmas history: Santa Claus is my loverboy
One of the most popular Japanese Christmas songs is Koibito ga Santa Kurousu, My Lover is Santa Claus. Last year I posted a sultry jazz version of it, this is the original. Or at least a live version of the original, by the original artist. She is Matsutoya Yumi, and the song is from her 1980 album Surf & Snow, a nice and cuddly pop-rock album with some funk and jazz touches to enjoy in front of the fire place of your ski lodge, or on an Okinawan beach, because there are steel guitars on it as well. An album for all seasons.
The song wasn’t an immediate hit, but it became one six years later, because it was used in a hit movie, Take Me Out to the Snowland. Since then it has been covered numerous times. Just check it on YouTube. There might be a hundred different versions of it. Don’t miss this Covid lockdown version by a bunch of dorky salary men.
Christmas history. Enjoy, and a merry Christmas.
