Lily Chou Chou: a Wound to Recover From

Remember the scène where Uma Thurman picks out a samourai sword in Kill Bill? Of course you do. The music you hear in that scene (this song is called Kaifuku suru Kizu, “a wound to recover from”) is from a fictional singer, Lily Chou Chou, from another movie, by director Iwai Shunji, All About Lily Chou Chou. The soundtrack of that sublime movie consists of (besides some wonderful piano music, Debussy, among others, and some Okinawan music, always makes my eyes moist) a bunch of quite brilliant songs from Lily Chou Chou, who is really singer Salyu. Sad en melancholic, these songs never fail to stir something in me.

Anyway, I am in a sad and melancholic mood, so I thought I’d share this with you. If you want more, here is the complete Lily Chou Chou album. (PB)
