Rosalía goes Linda Blair in new video about sex and guilt
The new album by Spanish GENIUS Rosalía Vila Tobella (looking for the new Bowie? Look no further. Where Bowie took inspiration from Brechtian theater, Brel, Weill and Weimarian nightclubs, Rosalía takes Flamenco as her point of departure), due out November 2, has all the appearances of a religious work and it is clearly about bad relationships. Hence the title: El Mal Querer, ‘The Evil Desire’.
Consider these lines from the song in the video above:
Ya que lo malo sea bueno y impuro lo bendecido
Ya me abrazas sobre tu cuerpo
“That the bad be good and the impure the blessed
That you hold me against your body.”
Clearly about sex and guilt and doesn’t Rosalía’s jumping and coiling on that bed, surrounded by Catholic imagery, remind you a lot, a LOT of Linda Blair in The Exorcist?
The songs on her album, like her last two singles, are al about toxic relationships, poisoned by machismo, religion and guilt. They are presented as chapters, ‘Augurio’, ‘Concepcion’, ‘Éxtasis‘ which read like the different stepping stones towards an orgasm, but also like the different states of mind a martyr might go through.
And then there’s the album cover, on which Rosalía embodies the whore/madonna complex.
Really looking forward to this. (PB)
