Pumping rock chicks from Japan
Last week I fell instantly in love with singer/guitarist Yumi Uchizono of Japanese rock band The Akabane Vulgars on Strong Bypass (follow them on Twitter. Really cute and with that raven black, long flowing hair but a voice like a bloke who’s been chain smoking cigars for the past ten years.
Together with her sister Miki Uchizono, who plays bass and drummer Kei Sofue she forms one of the most exciting bands I’ve come across recently. I don’t know why, but these days the best rock, noise and punk is made in Japan, specifically by women, with bands like The ZZZ’s, BUDDY GIRL and MECHANIC, Fancy Numnum and The Akabane Vulgars. Aggressive, pumping noise but always melodic and with plenty of atmosphere.
I want to get these gals to The Netherlands. I’m thinking a Japanese rock festival to show people that great rock music is made outside of the Anglo Saxon world. Who wants to help me?
