Noisy introversion with The Extruders
I was kind of underwhelmed when I first heard The Extruders, a band that is aggressively plugged by music writer Ian Martin on his blog. Martin describes the band as minimalist postpunk and I thought The Extruders were overdoing it a little with the minimalist.
But after a while I became really hooked to the music, which is a little hypnotic. My eldest son took an immediate liking to the band though, right after hearing the first notes of a song I made him listen to.
The Extruders, not exactly the happiest of campers, remind me of early The Cure a lot, but with the introversion of The Tindersticks. Low throbbing sounds accompany the whispering voice of singer Yohei Toriyama, who also plays bass and I think the whole would have worked perfectly as the soundtrack of one of these great films Nagisa Oshima made in the sixties about troubled youths in Tokyo.
Getting their albums is a bit of a drag when you’re in Europe, and even in Tokyo I have yet to meet a record seller who knows what I’m talking about when I ask for The Extruders.
One can download their music from their Bandcamp-site though and I know, another site where you have to fill in your credit card number to be able to order one album.
But I’m telling you, Bandcamp has lots of other great music you will want to download, so it’s really worth the trouble.
