Beauty from Sudan by Hiba Elgizouli
If you think of Sudan, you’ll probably think of war and famine and female circumcision and all kinds of misery and pain, and indeed, there’s currently a populair uprising going on in the country. But it is also, as I was told by my girlfriend, who recently traveled Sudan (to help make this documentary for Dutch television), a country of very beautiful things and very beautiful people.
As is demonstrated here by Hiba Elgizouli, a singer/songewriter from Omdurman, the second-largest city in Sudan. I know her via Beehype, one of my favorite websites, containing new alternative music from all over the world.
Elgizouli makes what I would say is a mix of R&B and lounge, I understand the rythms are typically Sudanese. It’s very pleasant and easy in any case. Elgizouli finds beauty in simplicity, or maybe she brings beauty back to its basics.
I hope this, in combination with the gorgeous video, as beautifully minimalist as the music, will help you change your idea of Sudan somewhat. (PB)
