First Christmas movie ever
The first Christmas movie ever was made in 1898 by the Brit George Albert Smith. It is, of course, the first appearance of Santa Claus on the big screen. The film is aptly called ‘Santa Claus‘.
As you can see, it’s a pretty elaborate piece of film making, with special effects and all. The tucking into their bed of the children by the maid may take unnecessarily long, but the projection on the bedroom wall of the scene with Santa Claus on the roof seems rather sophisticated for the time. Smith used the technique of double exposure, which was patented by him. (PB)
