Indie music from South Korea: Yaeji and OHHYUK

Loyal followers of Frontaal Naakt’s music section will be familiar with Brooklyn-based music producer Yaeji, of whom I am a big fan. Yaeji went to Seoul to team up with indie musician OHHYUK for two groovy songs, one of which you’re now playing or just played, the other you’ll find here.

Two incredibly catchy, laid-back, trance-like songs which are intricately composed. Notice, for instance, the clock-like ticking in “29”, stressing the haste expressed in the line “I gotta go, I gotta go, I gotta go”. The subtle guitar notes give it a little playfulness and the tempo is slowed down by the steady drum bass.

In “Year to Year” music is used to express the passing of time, which goes faster as we grow older. But the long notes and Yaeji’s chant-like singing still give everything a dream-like quality. (PB)
