Living Colour’s Corey Glover’s brilliant solo song

One of the best things to come out of the eighties is the band Living Colour. Living Colour and Fishbone, those are the two best bands of the eighties. Fishbone has always stayed a cult band with only one modest hit as I recall, a really great cover version of Curtis Mayfield’s Freddie’s Dead.

But Living Colour was huge, a sensation. It surprises and dispappoints me therefore that people tell me they have never heard of the band. That’s like saying you have never heard of Queen, or The Supremes.

Anyway, Living Colour’s singer is Corey Glover, who has a voice like a bell tower. He went solo in 1998 with an album called Hymns. A fine album, but it has none of the brilliance of Living Colour. The musicians on it are accomplished, but not nearly as crushingly awesome as the members of Living Colour. I seldomly listen to Hymns anymore.

But there’s this one song on the album I still play regularly and that’s the above song, Do You First Then Do Myself, a threatening monster of a song in which Glover seems to release all his pent up rage. It has an energy, a dynamic I find irresistable.

And well, I thought I’d share. (PB)
