The Golden Cups, punky sixties beat music from Japan

I discovered a great Japanese band from the sixties, The Golden Cups. They formed in Yokohama in 1966, influenced by the music on an America radio station aimed at American troops then stationed in Japan.

The problem is that most of the songs on their albums on Spotify are not nearly in the same league as the song in the video above, This Bad Girl. This is due to the fact their label made them do covers of American songs and poppy main stream ditties, only allowing them artistic freedom on the B-sides of their singles.

This Bad Girl, which is pretty wild (listen to that bass player!) is the B-side to their single Nagai Kami No Shōjo, ‘Long-Haired Girl’. Give it a listen and you know what I mean.

The images in the video are from the movie Funeral Parade of Roses, a 1969 film by Toshio Matsumoto, set in the underground gay scene of Tokyo of the sixties. A master piece and cult classic.

If you want to see a video with the actual Golden Cups, look here.
