Young rapster Daoko teams up with veteran Mummy-D and it’s just great
I like the Japanese rap and hip hop scene. I think the Japanese language (na ni ne no nu) is perfect for it and a certain mellow irony, a certain looseness seems to prevail. Daoko is a young rapper who mixes hip hop with retro soul, disco and R&B and guest-starring in this song/video is 50 year old rap-veteran Mummy-D of RHYMESTER, a rap-group which should be much famouser in the West than it is. They add unexpected, playful elements to their cheerful rapping without becoming a pastiche or something. Their album ‘Bitter, Sweet & Beautiful‘ was one of my favorite albums of 2015 and I still like listening to it.
Mummy-D’s contribution gives extra depth to Daoko’s song. His distinctive voice (what is it, a nasal sound that originates somewhere in his throat?) colours Saoko’s light spriteliness without dominating the whole thing, like middle-aged men are wont to do.
Daoko has a new EP out, Charm Point, and it’s an extremely pleasant experience. (PB)
