Suiyoobi no Campanella (水曜日のカンパネラ)
Suiyoobi no Campanella (水曜日のカンパネラ) means Wednesday’s Campanella and I have no idea if that is a reference to Franz Liszt, some Italian philosopher or just the Italian word for ‘little bell’.
I can’t explain what I like so much about this group either. The very very pretty rapper/singer Komai doesn’t rap exceptionally well and her singing is even worse. But somehow it works, it’s very endearing in a weird way. And Suiyoobi’s very weird but beautiful videos are not to be missed. Perhaps if we consider Komai to be a Japanese Nico (you know, of the Velvet Underground) of electronic music, it all makes sense. Anyway, the music, by Kenmochi Hidefumi, is pretty cool. It is upbeat, funky, with a soupçon of shoe-gazing and a hint of ambient and touches of all kinds of other genres.
This here above really weird and silly video was just released and the song, Tchaikovsky Interlude – Ramos – (チャイコフスキー Interlude – ラモス-) is from Suiyoobi no Campanella’s new mini-album Watashi wo Onigasima ni Tsuretete (私を鬼ヶ島に連れてって) which means ‘Take me to Demon Island‘ and that is a reference to a hugely famous Japanese folk story about Momotaro (Peach Boy). There’s a song on the album called Momotaro and it has a nice, animated video as well, you can see it here.
Ordering the damn CD is a pain for Europeans, however, although it’s 2014 and the Internet is supposed to connect culture and music lovers from all over te world and make it possible to exchange music and books and stuff. Amazon Japan will not ship it to international customers and you can’t download it at iTunes either. That’s why I put up this link where you can get Watashi wo Onigasima ni Tsuretete for free.
