Romantic fairy-tale goths from Israel
Tonight we (well, to be honest: I) highlight some beautiful music from Israel for a change, The Aprons, two women who remind me of Siouxsie of Siouxsie and the Banshees, but also of Elsa and Lisa or what was that duo called, that enjoyed some fame in the slipstream of Prince in the eighties, with some great songs I believe were written or produced by him.
The Aprons seem to mix their goth punk with their romantic fairy-talish, new wavy singer song writing and some folkish elements (ever heard of The Flash Girls? They remind me of them too) and definitely a talent for great, melancholic, spooky melodies. Beautiful video too and obviously these two don’t have to play in metro stations for change, judging from the high production value.
Honestly, I didn’t know Israel had such fine bands like these. But would you believe I discovered The Aprons because they are mentioned in an interview with yet another Israeli girl duo, Shelly & Rotem, who are equally sublime, but don’t have a nifty video like The Aprons? I need to dig into the Israeli indie scene because I suspect there is even more.
You’re wondering now, how does Breedveld come up with these excellent but obscure bands from countries like Japan, Israel and Argentina all the time. Well, one of my secrets is this brilliant website, Beehype, a true treasure trove of cutting edge pop music from all over the world. I check it every day. Almost.
