Orange Pekoe, summery jazz from Japan

Nothing gets me in that sultry summery holiday mood as much as bossa nova. I especially have a knack for Japanese bossa nova. It must have really been a thing in Japan in the sixties, because many great artists from that time have at least one bossa nova track to their name.

There exist different compilations of these songs, my favorite of which is Tokyo Bossa Nova, with songs by artists like Ryoko Moriyama, Keisuke Eigusa and movie star Ruriko Asaoka. I play it all the time in summer. My daughter loves the record too.

Now I would love to share a video of one of the great tracks on that album, for instance a song by Tami Masuda that breaks my heart, Yattsu no Omoide, but there just don’t seem to exist any.

However, looking for Japanese bossa nova tracks on YouTube I discovered a band, or actually a duo, that’s pretty big in Japan but I never heard about before. Orange Pekoe, named after a tea (I am not a tea guy) produced a number of albums between 2002 and 2009 full of intricate summery jazz, samba and bossa nova.

It’s not Tokyo Bossa Nova but it comes pretty close at times and I thought I’d share the above summery video with you. (PB)
