Punk feminist band Otoboke Beaver fears dying alone as much as you do

Feminist punk band Otoboke Beaver’s new album is out and you can download it here. It’s wild and energetic and very loud. Their lyrics are about the immense social pressures young Japanese women are under. They’re expected to find a good husband, have children, be subservient, be soft-spoken and spread joy, but in a modest way.

Otoboke Beaver rails against all that. They’re loud, immodest, in their colorful tight dresses, and they want to be boss of their own lives. Their songs have titles that will horrify any Japanese mother in law: ‘I’m not maternal’, ‘I won’t dish out salads’ and ‘You’re no hero shut up f*ck you man-whore’, but they’re funny rather than angry and full of self-mockery.

The song above is about young women’s anxiety about finding someone nice, and their fear of dying alone. Well, that’s something we can all relate to, isn’t it. (PB)
