LLLL’s Faithful may very well be the Low of this time
Paradice, LLLL’s debut album, made it into my list of personal favorites of the year 2014. Now the formation, which seems to consist of only one guy (Japan Times interview here) hiring different female singers, has a new album out, Faithful, which I like just as much, maybe even a little better.
The sound is still highly reminiscent of the New Wave and New Romantics of the eighties, with ethereal female voices over dreamy pop tunes. In the above song, ‘Blue‘, I am hearing heavy influences by Tears for Fears and Scritty Politti.
Some tracks even kind of remind me of – if I may be so bold – Bowie’s 1977 album Low, where ambient met pop and rock to somehow paint a very atmospheric picture in music of Berlin at the time.
Check out, for instance, this track, ‘Only To Silence ft. Metoronori‘ which is almost a crossing between ‘Subterraneans‘ and ‘Weeping Wall‘ at the beginning, after which it evolves into a kind of a bonus track of Vangelis’ Blade Runner soundtrack. Of course the kaleidoscopic time-lapse video of Tokyo helps to evoke these associations. (PB)
