The haunting throat singing of Inuit performer Tanya Tagaq
One of the most striking tracks on the album ‘We Are the Halluci Nation‘ by A Tribe Called Red is ´Sila´, featuring Inuit throat singer Tanya Tagaq.
Now this is quite something else. Throat singing is apparently something Inuit women do in duets, contesting each other to see who can outlast the other. The Ainu, the indigenous people of Japan, seem to have a similar art form.
It´s primal, monstrous, alien, intimidating, haunting and also engrossing and quite beautiful and rather sexual if I may say so. I never heard anything like it before. Tanya Tagaq is the first woman to throat sing solo, and I posted the above video because it´s pretty and entertaining. It´s a kind of spiritual horror movie with erotic undertones.
If you want to hear her in a more pure fashion, I mean without electronics and beats and stuff, see this video of a TedX performance, or this video or this performance. (PB)
