‘Ethnocide’ by Supaman
“Kill the Indian, save the man” is the most notorious statement by Richard Henry Pratt (1840 – 1924), reputedly the first man to use the word ‘racism’ on record (he was a critic of racial segregation) and the founder of the Carlisle Indian Industrial School to educate Native Americans. This meant wiping out their language and culture, an effort the American government invested an incredible amount of money and energy in at th end of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th.
Native American rappers like Frank Waln and Supaman (he is the dancing bloke with the hat on) struggle to get young people interested in their culture and language again. Above is the new music video by Supaman (we remember him from earlier installments of Frontaal Naakt’s little music corner, right?) in which the cultural genocide (which followed on physical genocide in the 19th century) of the Native Americans is adressed.
The man speaking at the beginning is Walking Buffalo, a famous chief of the Blackfoot people, who lived from 1871 to 1967. (PB)
